Years & Years’ new single ‘Crave’ is inspired by ABBA.
Olly Alexander – who is now the only member of the pop group – has revealed that the Swedish pop icons’ ‘weird’ story arcs in their songs influenced her latest track from the upcoming album ‘Night Call’.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, he said: “Well you know who was an inspiration in the studio? Well, among others ABBA. You know how ABBA takes you on a trip? suddenly, there will be a change or a change, and you’re like, “Oh, take me with you.†So there you go. They are so weird.
Olly, 31, also revealed that he channeled “slightly deranged sexual energy” into the LP, which sees him play a character he admitted to have been “at different times” in his life.
He explained, “I really wanted to get into that kind of twisted fantasy…
“Crave†is a good example of this slightly deranged sexual energy that has kind of become a muse, this character that I’ve been a lot at different times, so it’s throughout the record. And I think it’s a little more assertive than maybe the previous ones. Exactly. Ask what you want, guys… I definitely feel stronger.
Alexander admitted that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he was not in the correct “free space” to work on the disc, as he added that fans can expect the collection to be “a little sexy” and “a little exciting”.
Returning to music after working on Russell T. Davies ‘drama television series – which focuses on a group of gay men during the UK HIV crisis – he said:’ From the moment I met Russell T. Davies, the writer, and reading the script, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so special. It is a once in a lifetime thing. But I think coming out of there, and then obviously the pandemic and everything that happened, really took a break from getting the music ready, and I wasn’t in a free space where I could get myself. concentrate at all, like a lot of people.
“So I’m just happy to be back. The music I make is so escape-oriented, but I really wanted this to be a place where you’re going to have fun, and it’s going to be a little sexy, a little exciting … And so I just really wanted to bring it all in. that, and have fun, like… God.
