Tutoring | Hodis Learning & Music’s top-level local service | South Pasadenan
Drew Hodis of Hodis Learning & Music is no ordinary tutor. He is a future doctoral student, psychology student and mentor, and he brings all these elements to each session with his students.
“I believe the most effective way for students to learn is through kindness, patience, empathy, and positive motivation,” Hodis explains, “And I saw it worked. This is what drives my teaching philosophy and I instill it in each of my tutors and teachers.
Hodis started as an individual tutor almost a decade ago. With nine tutors, music and art teachers now a staff member, he can offer assistance on almost any matter.
“I started out as a tutor when I was in South Pasadena High School, and I’ve mainly worked with students with special needs,” he explains. “I have always enjoyed helping them and finding ways to make information more accessible. It was so enriching!
A few years ago, when Hodis needed a job, he didn’t want a typical entry-level position. He kept thinking about high school and tutoring. At that time, he also knew that he wanted to get his doctorate to become a clinical psychologist and professor.
“Then I realized that I wanted to start my own music tutoring and teaching business. I knew starting a business would take a lot more effort than working shifts in a restaurant or store, but I had to do something meaningful.
“For me, tutoring isn’t just about helping a student complete their homework. I see a lot of children struggling with stress and self-esteem, I want to give them confidence and encouragement, ”says Hodis.
“You can’t do your best if you don’t feel motivated. I want my students to know that someone believes in them and that they can accomplish anything, in the classroom and beyond.
Hodis uses his tutoring experience and knowledge to make learning accessible to all students. “I can help students of all skill levels and abilities, so if your child has dyslexia, my team and I will adapt our teaching methods to make sure we cover the material effectively and efficiently. “
However, the business is not limited to tutoring; as the name suggests, music is also an integral part of the business of Hodis. “I grew up playing the piano, trained in classical music for 13 years, and I also play guitar, drums, trumpet, tuba and sing,” says Hodis.
“The music is so powerful and therapeutic. Listening to music and playing music has helped me overcome challenges and put me in touch with some of my best friends. I want students of all ages to experience the same joy and transformation in music that I have experienced! “
And as he mentions, his services aren’t limited to school-aged children alone. Anyone of any age is encouraged to register for a session if they are interested or need assistance.. “My tutors and I don’t work strictly from kindergarten to high school. We have tutors who can help you with college courses, teach English as a second language, or help you learn the basics of a new instrument.
Drew dedicates time and works with his staff to ensure that his services are accessible to the greatest number of people in the area; while starting his doctoral program.
“With my PhD, one of my goals is to develop a peer mentoring program in South Pasadena to connect students and the community. “
But one goal that will always remain the same for Hodis is to let his students feel more confident in their understanding of the subject. And with that confidence, to see the results reflected in their grades and preparation.
