Spotify was founded in 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden, by former Stardoll CTO Daniel Ek and Tradedoubler co-founder Martin Lorentzon. The company’s title is derived from a misheard name shouted by Lorentzon. They took this misunderstood word and thought of an etymology of a combination of “spot” and “identify”.
In February 2009, Spotify began public registration of free streaming services in the UK. Signups immediately skyrocketed upon the release of its mobile service, eventually leading Spotify to briefly halt signup for the free service in September. Realizing they had something special, they decided to change the UK application to invite-only.
Spotify was launched in the United States in July 2011, offering an ad-supported six-month trial period where new users were allowed to listen to unlimited music for free. In January 2012, after the free trial periods expired, Spotify decided to limit users to ten hours of streaming and five plays per song each month. In March, Spotify opted to remove the limits on the free service, generating countless followers and subscribers.
