Mexican restaurant Tekila will open a beer garden on May 5 in Sussex

Sussex business owner Chaz Hastings says his long-awaited beer garden is set to open on Cinco de Mayo on May 5.

But if the weather is nice, it might open earlier, he said.

The 3,000 square foot beer garden is attached to Tekila, a 3,000 square foot Mexican restaurant that Hastings opened in December next to the Piggly Wiggly on Main Street in Sussex.

The beer garden will be “amazing”, he said.

He said that during beer garden season — usually Memorial Day through Labor Day — the plan is to have live music every Thursday through Sunday. He said there will be two fire pits and a special taco menu. Hastings added that there will be two large outdoor televisions.

Hastings, which also owns Wisconsin Big Boy in Germantown, said it plans to have the Big Boy food truck on Saturdays to provide additional menu options.

He plans to organize activities in the beer garden, including the German game of hammerschlagen, in which people try to drive a nail into a stump, toss bags and other games.

He said the beer garden will also have two sandboxes for children.

The beer garden will also include an outdoor station for making s’mores on special occasions.

Hastings also plans to open Te Amo, a pizzeria and Italian restaurant, as well as an ice cream shop, La Coppa. Although there have been some delays, both are expected to open later this year, he said.
