Met Gala: ASAP Rocky wears young designer ERL
When ASAP Rocky asked Eli Russell Linnetz if he could visit the young designer’s studio, Mr. Linnetz was somewhat reluctant. His space is “very private,” he said, tucked away in Venice Beach, Calif., Isolated from the fashion world.
But the New York rapper showed genuine interest in the label, ERL – and he was “the sweetest, most charismatic person,” Linnetz said, which the creator found refreshing. He had spent a few years in the music industry, directing music videos for Kanye West and creating sets for Lady Gaga, before leaving so that he “could go and create something authentic,” he said. declared. Now it is considered to be one of the next big things in fashion.
As for the Met Gala, ASAP Rocky knew right away that he wanted to wear a jumbo duvet from ERL’s Spring 2022 collection. In the look book for this collection, it is worn by a woman like a giant shawl, enveloping and forming a train around her.
“He was, like, ‘I want this,’” Mr. Linnetz said.
For the Met Gala, Mr. Linnetz designed a personalized version using pieces of fabric and antique quilts sewn together, including a few personal items, like his father’s bathrobe. He ordered a quilt in North Carolina, Zak Foster, specializing in memory quilts – that is, quilts made from someone’s old clothes, often for grieving families.
“I was intrigued by this concept, as something very American,” he said. “I haven’t given the theme much thought other than that, just because I feel like everything I do is closely tied to Americana.” Mr. Linnetz will have one of his pieces, a recreation of an old baseball uniform, on display in the Met exhibit.
Mr Linnetz recognizes the Met Gala as a big time for his little label, and speaking on Zoom about a week before the event, he was still working to be comfortable with it.
“I had a dream of dressing someone, but I was a little torn,” he said. “I thought maybe it was good to keep my head down and work and focus and not get caught up in it. I created ERL to get away from all that kind of celebrity music business stuff.
Several Met Gala guests ended up asking to be dressed by ERL, Mr Linnetz said, but in the end he wanted to “focus on someone who I’m like a friend with and who I believe in, and who is just a nice person “.
